Today, we continue with the 2nd installment of the Series we started yesterday.

2. EXPERIENCE WITH DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:  THE AWFUL TRUTH is, STOP using the functional resume format.  For those of you who don’t know, a functional resume lists skills and abilities without using a chronological job history.  Most hiring managers, corporate recruiters, and, well, basically everyone I know, hates them.  This sends up a big time red flag and usually indicates the candidate is trying to hide a break in employment or job-hopping.  THE AWFUL TRUTH is, assuming the company’s hiring manager doesn’t throw your resume in the trash because of its format,  the first thing you are going to be asked is to explain (in chronological order) your job history.  If you have a break in employment, it is going to come out then, and now you are really behind the eight ball. It looks like you weren’t being totally truthful on your resume. Just be honest on your resume. If you have the experience and skills for the job then, more times than not, the hiring manager is going to give you an opportunity to explain that break in your employment history.
